ABC das Minas é uma série perene que disseca o que falamos (ou deveríamos falar, ou parar de falar) e explica termos que muita gente só tem coragem de perguntar pro Google — que, no caso, pode trazer explanações bem fora do que é considerado ético e justo no admirável mundo do “novo normal”. Aqui, vamos naturalizar temas novos e complexos em poucos minutos. Com convidadas superespeciais para cada temporada de quatro episódios semanais, ABC das Minas é (tipo) aquela amiga entendida que salva nossa vida. Louie Ponto, a crítica feminista mais amada do YouTube, é a apresentadora-convidada da primeira leva do nosso glossário. Ela não curte muito termos em inglês, mas dada a importância da palavra “mansplaining” resolveu abrir uma exceção: no episódio de hoje, o quarto e último da sua lavra, Louie traduz o termo e explica por que isso é machismo.

Hi. I’m sorry, my Portuguese is poor so I have to respond in English. I LOVE the topic and agree that it is unfair to speak to others as if they are less intelligent or as if you know their life better than they do. I also agree that people should not let others take away their power. But I do not like the term “mansplaining” as a way to describe this negative communication style. I find the word to be discriminatory, suggesting that only men “talk down” to others and that if a woman uses this insulting type of communication, she is acting like a man. Words that embed gender, race, or age within a positive or negative action are offensive to me. There are lots of words in English that imprison people in social roles, defining dominating communication as something male (mansplaining), hysterical behavior as female (a hysterectomy gets rid of the crazy), emotional strength as “older masculine” (“Be a man!”), and emotional sensitivity as feminine and young (“You cry like a girl”). What do you think?
